It is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens, and you also get the added benefit of some extra protection. The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. HB-32 Flower-Type Lens Shade for 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens, as supplied with D70 Digital SLR camera (when purchased as a Nikon-configured body and lens outfit). Flower-Type bayonet lens hood provided with select NIKKOR lenses. Use of specifically engineered Nikon lens hoods is highly recommended. By reducing the amount of non-essential light falling onto the front lens element, lenses can better achieve their optimum optical performance, producing more saturated images.
